Pantone honours Prince with custom colour Love Symbol #2

Pantone Color Institute and The Prince Estate have announced the creation of a standardised custom colour to honour the international icon and musician Prince, who died in April 2016. The purple hue has been named Love Symbol #2 and was inspired by his custom-made Yamaha purple piano.

“Prince’s association with the colour purple was galvanised in 1984 with the release of the film Purple Rain, along with its Academy Award-winning soundtrack featuring the eponymous song. While the spectrum of the colour purple will still be used in respect to the “Purple One,” Love Symbol #2, will be the official colour across the brand he left behind,” said Pantone in a statement.

“The colour purple was synonymous with who Prince was and will always be. This is an incredible way for his legacy to live on forever,” said Troy Carter, entertainment advisor to Prince’s Estate.

“We are honoured to have worked on the development of Love Symbol #2, a distinctive new purple shade created in memory of Prince, ‘the purple one.’ A musical icon known for his artistic brilliance, Love Symbol #2 is emblematic of Prince’s distinctive style,” said Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Colour Institute. “Long associated with the purple family, Love Symbol #2 enables Prince’s unique purple shade to be consistently replicated and maintain the same iconic status as the man himself.”
