Proenza Schouler and Harley Weir support Planned Parenthood in latest film

Proenza Schouler debuts its third video project with artist Harley Weir on the topic of American non-profit Planned Parenthood. A film for Planned Parenthood of New York City, directed by Harley and styled by Camilla Kickerson, is a four-minute short that shows a series of women discussing their experiences of sex, gender and shame.

Amber Valletta, Jemima Kirke and Hanne Gaby Odiele — alongside many others — discuss the concept of femininity as a bid to save Planned Parenthood. The American health care system has been under pressure recently, ahead of a Senate vote to hear discussion on the Affordable Care Act’s repeal earlier this week. Today the vote resulted in a rejection of the proposal to repeal the act and defund Planned Parenthood, with seven Republicans voting against the measure.

“Planned Parenthood is an organisation that has had a profoundly positive influence on the people around us, so we contacted them to see if they’d be down to let us make something in support of them, but in our voice and with our team of creative collaborators,” says Lazaro Hernandez, designer from Schouler. “They have been incredibly supportive throughout this project.”

Lazaro and co-designer Jack McCollough chose to work with Harley for her “visual language that is moving the needle forward,” says Jack. Following previous collaborations, such as Legs Are Not Doors and Love Letter to Women, the film is the brand’s latest instalment. “Sometimes you have to think about the bigger picture and the world we live in today,” says Jack.

“We value integrity above all else, and see Proenza Schouler as a vehicle to explore what we find interesting and relevant to the moment we live in. We like to think that the Proenza Shouler woman is a thinking woman, and we feel this kind of project would resonate with her.”
