The six nominees have been announced for this year’s edition of one of the most prestigious photojournalism competitions of its kind, the World Press Photo Contest.

The award, that will be held in Amsterdam this April, will be celebrating its 63rd year of recognising the best pictures in visual journalism. The nominated images have captured moments from some of the world’s most notable news stories over the past year, and have been taken by photographers from all over the world.

The shortlisted nominees for the self-titled main prize are Mulugeta Ayene from Ethiopia, Farouk Batiche from Algeria, Yasuyoshi Chiba from Japan, Tomek Kaczor from Poland, Ivor Prickett from Ireland and Nikita Teryoshin from Russia. The winner will receive €10,000.

The images that have been nominated portray a range of subjects such as the emotional aftermath of last year’s Ethiopian Airlines crash, the physical trauma of an injured Kurdish fighter and a behind the scenes snapshot of a weapons convention.

The images will be judged by an independent jury of 17 professional photographers, headed up by head of Market Photo Workshop, South African Lekgetho Makola.

There are a number of other categories that have also been shortlisted, including the longer form Press Photo Story of the Year competition, as well as more specific subjects such as Environment, Nature and Portrait.

Overall this year saw 4282 entrants from 125 countries, submitting almost 75,000 images. These have since been whittled down to just 44 photographers from 24 countries ahead of the ceremony on 16 April.
