A New York exhibition has challenged more than 50 artists to rethink the notion of home in the setting of four residential apartments designed by the late architect Zaha Hadid. The building – 520 West 28th – is the first and only building by Hadid in New York City.

Timeshare, which opens on 28 September, has been put together by three New York-based curatorial teams, each of which will take over one of the luxury condos with a different agenda. Ecotone, curated by Eushavia Bogan and Clemence White, will feature artists’ speculations on the future inhabitants of luxury apartments (which includes a roof-top pool and the city’s first private 3D IMAX theatre) and will create new narratives for the building’s unusual architectural features.

Fun House, curated by Simran Johnstone and Emma Orlow, will respond directly to the ideas and designs of Zaha Hadid, focusing on the voyeuristic nature of living in an apartment block in New York. The final two apartments have been taken over by Duplex’s Eden Deering and Sydney Fishman, who initiated the Timeshare project. Here painters, sculptures, ceramicists and video artists will create works that play to the memory and fantasy of domestic spaces.

Creatives involved include graphic designer Clay Hickson, photographers Jackson Hallberg and Naima Green, artist Elise R. Peterson, illustrator and animator Lena Greene and painter Keiran Brennan Hinton.
