Here 2014: Agi & Sam

British fashion design wunderkinds Agi Mdumulla and Sam Cotton are one of the biggest success stories of the London menswear scene. Believing fashion should never be taken too seriously, their vibrant collections are a combination of bespoke print patterns and quintessentially British sense of humour in tailored, accessible shapes.

Their charming and disarmingly honest talk took the audience behind-the-scenes of their much-vaunted label. From early attempts at branding to their mentors (Paul Smith and their mums), they talked through the “fashion-maths” behind making their clothes; a rare insight into the commercial realities fashion designers must confront.


Nalden is co-founder of super simple file transfer service WeTransfer, the event partners for Here 2014. He spoke about how he developed WeTransfer as a creative showcase, his love of design simplicity and he explained why it’s the coders who’ll inherit the earth.

Mirko Borsche

Mirko Borsche is a hugely respected German graphic designer. He talked about his studio, where the whole team is encouraged to draw, and looked at his work for the Bavarian State Opera, where everything from the posters to the programmes are designed to make the art form more accessible.

Marion Deuchars

Illustrator Marion Deuchars has a wide-ranging portfolio and has produced several books designed to creatively engage youngsters. Her thought-provoking talk questioned why children are discouraged from drawing and encouraged us to reconnect with the enjoyment of actually making things.

As editor-in-chief of The Gentlewoman, Penny Martin oversees one of the leading independent magazines around. She was interviewed on stage by It’s Nice That’s Rob Alderson about her mission for the magazine, her editorial values and the pressures inherent in the fashion world.

Sam Jacob

Sam Jacob was a co-founder of the much-admired FAT architecture collective and is a very sought after writer and critic on a range of cultural issues. He gave an idea-rich presentation explaining the very essence of what design could and should be.

Los Angeles-based artist Eric Yahnker explores America’s social and cultural obsessions through his vibrant, provocative practice. He explained how lying about his basketball prowess got him a job on the South Park movie and he shared ten inspiring and important lessons about creativity.

Pentagram partner, graphic designer and filmmaker Marina Willer is an effervescent creative force. She spoke at Here spoke about letting the unexpected inform the aesthetic decisions we make and how anything from the amazing questions her kids ask her to pun-tastic shop names inspire her.
