Rebecca Sittler: How Watson Learned the Trick

Really enjoying the theatre of some of Sittler’s photos – which look like they’ve been pulled from a David Lynch crime scene. It makes sense that the title should make such excellent use of self-fulfilling narrative. Watson, believing Sherlock’s deductive powers to be cursory and easily applied, tries and fails to assume any of the details of Sherlock’s day. In this series, Sittler’s lens focuses on many unexceptionable details (captured wonderfully, full of colour and texture), and perhaps we’re to make assumptions about them. But we’d probably get it wrong, and we must be reminded: “It’s a very superficial trick, and no doubt you will soon acquire it.”
