Russell Hill

Posted by Charlotte Simmonds,

What’s that I smell? Is it “Island Breeze”? Is it “Lavender Meadow”? No, it’s a Russell Hill multi-sensory installation! When I first encountered Russell’s work in a gallery I’ll admit I was a bit taken aback by the “refreshing” spritzes ejecting from his meticulously arranged row of air fresheners. But that’s Russell’s thing – taking those everyday object we’d often hide in a cupboard, or behind a bathroom door, and presenting them as artistic readymades in their own right. The livid green of laundry detergent, the sensual efficiency of a chrome Airwick – this is the palette Russell accentuates for his considered, and thoroughly engaging creations.
