A "user-generated glitch" in awesome new Squarepusher site

As record labels go, it’s safe to say Warp is one intrinsically linked to great design. We covered its site redesign back in January, and now one of the label’s biggest acts Squarepusher has launched a new website, designed by Rob Hampson and Syd Lawrence at the modestly-named agency, We Make Awesome Shit.

Rob was approached by Warp to create an image-led online home for Squarepusher’s new album Damogen Furies, which had to house all the release’s artwork, function across all screen sizes and feature a track embed, tour dates and social links.

“Armed with the album art and having listened to a fair amount of Squarepusher tracks, we felt we had a pretty solid idea for how things could look and work,” says Rob. “The album art gave us a great starting point for the site design. It features abstract, glitchy photography with a monospace-inspired typeface. The contrast between the photography and typography is conceptually really interesting and we wanted to echo that in the site.”

Each music download from the site uses a totally unique artwork, generated digitally in a fitting counterpart to the forward-thinking, innovative, and often rather terrifying nature of Squarepusher’s music. More generally, the site takes cues from the photography that accompanies Damogen Furies. Rob explains: “We had loads of fun with this, moving individual elements of the layout at different speeds down the page as you scroll and implementing a user-generated glitch where as you scroll everything goes a bit crazy.”
