Studio Swine’s installation for Cos emits bubbles you can catch with burst-resistant gloves

Studio Swine has created an installation for retailer Cos at Milan Furniture Fair called New Spring, which emits bubbles you can catch when wearing special gloves. The design takes the form of a six-metre-high, minimalist, white tree, intended to be reminiscent of a cherry blossom tree, with curved branches that visitors can walk around underneath.

White translucent bubbles, or “blossoms”, are released intermittently from the branches, that burst and release a white mist on contact with skin, but remain in tact when met with textured fabrics. The London-based design duo, comprising Alexander Groves and Azusa Murakami, aimed to create “a communal experience” also drawing visual inspiration from Italian fountains, Murano chandeliers and the blossom scene in Akira Kurosawa’s film Seven Samurai.

New Spring is installed at decommissioned former theatre Cinema Arti in central Milan until 9 April.
