Art: Lenka Clayton's new project offers 1/57th of Andy Warhol

Date

Laughing playfully at those types who might purchase “a bit of Justin Timberlake’s old shoelace”, or “some loo roll that Britney Spears maybe blew her nose in one time” on eBay, Lenka Clayton’s lovely project 1/57th of Andy Warhol reexamines the confines of what makes art, and what makes an artist. To create the work, Lenka took a red button-down shirt which once belonged to Andy Warhol and carefully unpicked it into 57 pieces, which she then numbered, boxed and distributed with a certificate of authenticity. The result? A truly charming selection of dispersed fragments which are both tiny souvenirs of the famous Pop Artist, and works of art in their own right, too The dinner party conversation would be an added bonus: “What’s that hanging over my fireplace? Oh, that’s just 1/57th of Andy Warhol.” Perfect.
