Warrior's Dance

Posted by Alex Bec,

It’s been too long since MTV threw up something that I was genuinely excited to hear and see. However, The Prodigy’s new offering ’Warrior’s Dance’ had both my eyes and ears roused. Directed by Academy films’ Corin Hardy, we see cigarette packets bought to life, light a fire and have a rave in all their stop-motion glory. Twinned with a stunning return to form musically, The Prodigy are most without doubt back.

Jeff from Booooooom got in touch with us at the end of last week to share their latest film profiling a number of creatives invited out to Hawaii for POW! WOW! festival. Held every February, the street art festival sees artists descend onto the island of Oahu to celebrate art, music and culture.

Tom Geraedts’ film for the Oasis of Matisse exhibition currently on show at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam is a beautiful tribute to the artist famed for his simple yet powerful cut-outs. It’s incredible how motion designer and director Tom has so seamlessly allowed nature to peel itself apart to reveal bright, tropical colours within; the floating, abstract shapes gliding weightlessly through the gallery past some of Matisse’s most famous works. With a portfolio full of brilliant creative work and clients including BBC World News, M&C Saatchi and ITV, Tom is definitely one to watch out for.

We’ve gushed plenty about Toro y Moi’s Chaz Bundick in the past: whether it’s his bookshelf, his orange jumper or the expertly dispersed dry ice in his music videos. Too much is never enough of Chaz, though, and this time around the musician, illustrator, designer and founder of Company Creative has gotten together with site Yours Truly to make a neat little film explaining about how graphics and illustration meet music in his work. From sketching up cool little dog-men to screen-printing them onto T-shirts and all of the other stages that come in-between, the site is featuring Chaz’s polaroids, sketchbooks and photographs all week. It’s a Chaz-fest, and we’re all over it.

So many of our beloved movie franchises have been recycled into various remakes, sequels, and prequels. Jurassic Park is no exception with the fourth instalment, Jurassic World currently in a cinema near you. But within the ether of the internet we’ve stumbled across this incredible remake of the original film, videoed 20 years ago by two kids in their basement.

While this video has already made the rounds a couple of times, we keep finding ourselves going back to this film by Jacob T. Swinney. Using 55 films, Jacob brilliantly supercuts the first and final frames of each and places them side-by-side. It’s a fascinating insight into the filmmakers’ decisions and the themes that weave their way into the big, blockbuster features. Some of the opening and closing shots are bewitchingly similar, some show progression or misfortune, and others simply use stunning imagery to grab our attention. From Silver Linings Playbook to The Usual Suspects, Jacobs simultaneously captures the anticipation and resolution felt when watching a film beautifully by placing these two moments next to each other.

There’s something so wonderfully pleasing about synchronicity and in M.I.A and Gener8ion’s new video The New International Sound Pt. II, the discipline exuded by all involved is stunning. Featuring the 36,000 students of Shaolin Tagou, the biggest fighting school for children in China, it’s a spectacular sight to see kids of all ages perform these delicate but deadly moves in perfect unison.

Is it still FOMO if you feel like you’re there? A bigger question for another time perhaps, but if you’ve ever felt like you’re missing out on the best parties with the most fabulous, stylish people, this film might slake your desperate, lonely, glitterless hunger. The film in question is from i-D, and its a relentlessly sparkling romp through time and glamour, in honour of the mag’s 35th birthday.

The winners of the Berlin Fashion Film Festival 2015 have been announced, with content for COS and a film about a fictional fashion designer that creates transparent clothing scooping some of the top prizes.

  9. List-vice-id-behind-the-scenes-beyond-beauty-its-nice-that-

Beauty is a slippery notion – it’s scruffy for some, preened and polished for another, punk for someone else. It can be all these things together, shaped and subverted by subcultures – a fact that the people over at iD know more than most. Examining this idea of the beauty of subcultures and merging life and art, a new project from iD, Beautiful Collaborations , draws us into the world of the stylists and makeup artists that create punks, grungy girls and boys and ravers from their beautiful blank canvases. The Microsoft HP Spectrex360 tablet helped to create the film, which takes us from the 80s to the present day through the wild makeup, clothes and personalities of the New Romantics through to “Seapunks” (a new one on us, too).

Tomorrow night Barcelona take on Juventus in the Champions League final, a game which (for better or for worse) sums up much about modern football. It’s easy to forget quite how much the game has changed but one man who has literally watched that happen is Manel Vich, the 77-year-old who has been Barca’s matchday announcer for nearly six decades. He first stood in as a favour to the stadium manager back in the old Les Corts ground in 1956 but has gone on to become part of the club’s fabric. Incredibly he’s missed only three games during that time – two because he was in hospital and once because the match clashed with his daughter’s wedding.

As a kid I had the kind of roller skates that neatly fitted over your shoes. It was like being given the gift of movement, no longer did I walk, I glided. I didn’t turn corners at right angles, I danced and whirled around them. It was a sad day when they’d been adjusted as far as they could go and no longer fitted me, and the hobby had to be relinquished to my childhood. But for a small group in San Francisco roller skating is a part of their daily life and it’s the focus of Daniel Soares’ film Totally Free.

The whiff of fresh grass or a Watermelon breezer can bring back sweet memories of more carefree, sunshiny days – that seemingly never-ending post GCSE summer where everything seemed possible and one day lolling about in the park hopelessly crushing on someone rolled into the next. The reality was that those days were really a bit grim, often dampened with rain or fake ID issues, and interspersed with equally never-ending seeming days stacking shelves in Sainsbury’s. But that feeling of warmth and nostalgia has been potently evoked in an even more dreamy setting with a cast of enviably gorgeous, carefree Cailfornia young’uns thanks to a new short by Matt Lambert for Marc by Marc Jacobs.

WHY has no one utilised the dry-ice in the fruit and veg section in a supermarket for the inspiration behind a music video before?! It’s strangely hypnotic seeing it waft all over the aubergines, falling gracefully over the shiny brown onions as if it were landing softly on the round toe of Gene Simmons’ shoe in 1975. Picture Pictures, the guys over in the US who have made some of the most fantastic music videos on It’s Nice That in the past few years, have recently completed this masterpiece for super nice man Chaz Bundick AKA Toro Y Moi.
