Work / Photography Damien Maloney talks about how he became a "self-taught hobbyist photographer"

Texas-born photographer Damien Maloney describes his style as “somewhere between recording what is in front of me and playing with things to see if I can construct something believable”. Now living in San Francisco, Damien’s first introduction to photography was taking pictures for his college newspaper which saw him shooting portraits, sports and still lifes. “At the time I was really excited to take pictures of anything, so I think I tried to apply the same philosophy to all these different image categories,” he explains. “I spent a lot of time on the internet engaging with other people’s pictures, asking them what equipment they used, and learning how to use lighting equipment. I identify with the self-taught hobbyist photographer.”

Snapping his way from the sticky floors of booze-fuelled Vice parties all the way to sleek shoots with world-famous footballers, London-based photographer Alex de Mora was signed by agency DMB represents last week. “Being on the same roster as Martin Parr is kind of nuts as I’m a big fan of his!” the photographer laughs. Curious to find out more about the man behind the lens, we caught five minutes with Alex.

Work / Photography Photographer Adrian Samson plays with space and perspective in this series of “still lifes”

Photographer Adrian Samson’s latest series is all about colours and forms. Titled Chroma there’s now four different iterations of the project but all are united in their aesthetic. “Earlier this year I got inspired by the exhibition of Russian Art of the 1920s and 30s at the Royal Academy of Arts called Revolution, especially by the geometric abstract paintings of Malevich and Kandinsky,” explains Adrian. “Kandinsky’s work was the first I had on my wall when I was growing up in Slovakia, so for me it was also a return to my first memories of seeing art.”

As we sweat our way through the longest day of the year, pagans and revellers in Wiltshire are probably heading for bed after spending the night beneath the stars in one of the oldest celebrations in the world. Summer solstice marks the longest day – and shortest night – of the Gregorian calendar and at 04:52 this morning, around 13,000 people saw in the beginning of the day at Stonehenge, the Neolithic site where the sun and moon have been celebrated for more than 4,000 years.
