Craig Buchan captures modern day nuns in terrific series Commitment
A lot of us will have been there; you’re trying to mow the lawn and you can’t get the ruddy dog to leave you alone. It’s annoying sure, but if I had dedicated my life to God then I might see it as an (al)mightily unfair frustration.
This goes to the heart of what makes Scottish photographer Craig Buchan’s Commitment series so terrific. It follows a group of modern day nuns and focuses on how prosaic their day-to-day lives are, made all the more interesting because of the otherworldy context of their vocation. These two elements work hand in hand nicely in Craig’s shots, where intricate crucifixes alternate with mundane chores like hoovering the car mats. I can’t quite articulate why I like these so much, or why I find them so quietly uplifting.
