Meet Berlin-based studio Büro Bum Bum

Date
19 April 2017

The six partners of Berlin-based studio Büro Bum Bum started off as friends. “All of us met in university back in 2009 while studying graphic design,” Büro Bum Bum tells us. “Besides our studies, we started to work on personal projects and rented a space in 2012 where we had the freedom to experiment. That’s basically how we found each other. In 2014 we made the decision to put the already existing structures to the next level and made a business out of it. The rest is history.”

Now, the six partners are assisted in their services with around four to six freelancers, which includes projects involving art direction, branding, editorial, exhibitions, identities, illustration, photography, posters, research, typefaces and websites for the likes of Adidas, Converse, Interview magazine, Jil Sander and Vice. “We describe ourselves as a collective,” it says. “A collective that has developed its very own working methods over the past years. This operation mode is fuelled by a steady progression of thought exchange, an openness toward new input and a curious way of thinking. Work and life in the studio are very intimate as we have known each other for years now. We cook together for lunch and hang out as well as work a lot too.”

In terms of creative output, Büro Bum Bum explains: “We always try to create research-driven and strong concepts, based on the input we get from our clients.” While the studio says that “we’re not focusing on a specific visual style that stands for the studio,” Büro Bum Bum notes that “our inspiration comes from our very own involvement in the already existing (matters), our daily life and thriving surroundings. We always try to get as much input from clients as possible. We then sort, edit and rework it. As we are six or more contributors in the studio, there’s always a lot of discussion in place, hence we inspire each other a lot.”

For now, the studio is working on “many different projects” across “music artworks, photo editorials, a social media campaign, restaurant branding or a poster series” as well as its first exhibition together with the team’s friend and workmate Timm Hartmann which will take place in Berlin in May, and, “as we like very much working in the cultural field we’re super happy that we just started working on a corporate design for a German dramatic art academy.”
