The effortlessly lovely hand-drawn illustrations of Paula Bulling

Date
6 December 2016

Paula Bulling has an illustration style that many wish for. Each of her sketches are effortlessly lovely. Landscapes, town squares filled with people, restaurants or bedrooms, each sketched out in a style of layered fluidity.

The Berlin-based illustrator’s portfolio is an amalgamation of sketches and watercolour pieces, depicted as either comic book strips or a series of singular drawings. Many of her drawings are so natural they almost look delicately torn out from her sketchbook and directly posted on her website; they never appear overworked. As a result, looking through her portfolio mirrors the feeling of flicking through a collection of sketches, where sometimes even the drawings from the alternate side of paper sneak through.

Paula’s drawings feel personable and relatable. This is most obvious within the illustrator’s watercolour artworks, where her brushstrokes are evident and a warm colour palette is considered. With grace, colours are contrasted cautiously against one another to create landscapes or objects with contemplated simplicity.
