Utopia-focussed design work from studio Public School

Date
2 October 2015

Public School is a design studio with a gainful interest in architecture, particularly that rooted in utopian ideologies—modernist, concrete structures and their minimal visual attractions. Its exhibition and book Daring the Shutter was a study of shading devices in Tel Aviv; shutters justified by the climate but designed for aesthetic rather than the height of the sun and Concrete Deserts is a self-published zine documenting the Brutalist structures on Israel’s periphery. Their design aesthetic seems to respond to the job at hand, maintaining their clean lines and unintrusive typography amongst references to images and production values of eras gone by.

Based in Tel Aviv, the studio was founded last year by Assaf Cohen and Johanna Asseraf, who, as well as working on exhibition and publication design, collaborate with local and international TV stations on show packages and channel identities.
