Tim Lindacher embraces the communicative ethos of graphic design

For graphic designer Tim Lindacher it is his peers and friends that have inspired and pushed forward his skills and stylistic tendencies. Growing up in Schifferstadt, Germany, Tim moved to Mannheim to study and moved in with fellow designers, Tobias Hammer, Jean-Pierre Meier and Steffen Hotel, “which was very important in my life,” he tells It’s Nice That. One of the main factors Tim decided to study at Hochschule Mannheim was komma magazine, an editorial project which publishes the work of the bachelor and master students every semester. After joining the course Tim became editor, and latterly editor-in-chief.

Tim’s flat mates were also on the komma team, meaning graphic design, particularly in the editorial sector, took over his social life as well as his studies. “It truly helped me to get better, because we not only lived together, we also worked all day and night,” he explains. Surrounding himself with people following a similar graphic design path means the constant conversation on the subject spurs creativity. “My girlfriend Josie Doser also studies at Hochschule Mannheim helps me a lot as well -discussing work with her always inspires me and improves my work.”

Wanting to expand their graphic design capabilities, Tim and Steffen decided to start another publication venture, A Mag A Month, “because we were really bored of the tasks our faculty had to offer, especially in the editorial segment,” he says. “Generally a lot of classes are underwhelming and are not connected with pushing student progression, so we decided to take action.”

A Mag A Month, picks a theme each time, “searching for content that we personally find interesting and then designing a magazine that fits the theme”. The team have already published two issues, the first on Motocross and the second on Aerodynamics. The third, which they are currently working on focuses on the leftovers of photography: “Pictures that did not get included in a series but still have their own special fascination, or one-shots that didn’t fit into any project. We want to shed light on the unique outsider, the ones that don’t quite fit in because they are different, or something was missing. We want to give them a place to fit in with others of their kind.”

It is extremely impressive that Tim and his talented peers are completing this magazine while still studying. Looking towards the future and completing his studies it is clear that the designer will continue his collaborative and communicative ethos towards graphic design. “I can’t really say what comes next, but I do know is that I don’t want to settle down on a specific design approach or a specific them of graphic design,” he says. “I want to learn new things and experience different ways of working. There isn’t just one way of doing something. For me graphic design is about moving on and learning new stuff and meeting new people in life.”
