Gather round children, it's your weekly dose of weirdness. The Weekender!

Date
24 April 2015

My, what a week it’s been. We’re all tuckered out after celebrating the launch of Printed Pages last night. But you know what, just for you, we’ll muster up the rest of our diminishing will to keep on typing to present this week’s edition of the Weekender, because we’re so nice, and because it makes us feel just that little bit closer to Saturday. And of course, to all of you. So here’s all the art and design bits and bobs you could possibly want for your two days of freedom.

GraphicDesign&: Survey Results

– GraphicDesign& released the results of a survey researching the way graphic designers view themselves this week, revealing some fascinating and at times disheartening facts about the industry.

– We spoke to the man behind Instagram feed Graphilately about why stamps are such a perfect medium for graphic arts, and why it’s time to make them cool again.

– Freelance designer and Gratuituous Type editor Elana Schlenker has set up a store in Pittsburgh which asks men and women to “pay what you are paid,” thereby charging women 74 cents for ever dollar paid by a man to highlight the gender pay gap.

– Anothermag.com editor Laura Bradley showed us her favourite books, and explained the “fur and food shelf,” in this week’s Bookshelf feature.

Amy Lombard: Kidz Bop for Bloomberg Businessweek

– Documentary photographer Amy Lombard went backstage at Kidz Bop for Bloomberg Businessweek. Here she is recounting what she saw!

– Matt Henry’s new series The Trip replicates the cinematic drama of 60s acid culture, but in still photographs. Perhaps it has to be seen to be believed.

– This week Channel 4 unveiled a new news service entitled 4NewsWall. It’s hosted on Tumblr, targeted at young people and it uses GIFs to report the news. What do you think?

– Here is Manchester-based design agency DR.ME, on its great work for record label Tri Angle.

– Believe it or not, there’s a stray mountain lion roaming freely around the Hollywood hills, and no matter how many months of camera footage it took, National Geographic photographer Steve Winter was determined to catch an image of it.

Pick Me Up: Lazy Oaf

– Pick Me Up has arrived! London’s yearly bumper celebration of all that’s great about illustration and graphic arts is on for two weeks at Somerset House, and as Liv Siddall attested, the 2015 edition is pretty bloody great.

– D&AD announced the 2015 Pencil Award winners (check them all out here). And without wishing to toot our own trumpet, you might just see a couple of nods to yours truly, in the shape of Printed Pages and our Studio Makgill-designed annual.

– Today we learned that Tate Modern boss Chris Dercon is to leave to work for Berlin’s Volksbühne theatre, but not til 2017.

– Designer Gareth Pugh has been live streaming his design process for us all to see how the magic happens, and you can find out all about it over on i-D.

Geof McFetridge: How to Walk in NY

Maisie Skidmore

Walking in New York is no mean feat! There are unspoken rules, actual written guidelines and universal beliefs to be adhered to, all of which are explained beautifully here by Steve Duenes and illustrated by the one and only Geoff McFetridge.

Rob Alderson

You may not have heard of Caroll Spinney but you’ve almost certainly seen him at work because the unassuming 81-year-old has spent the 46 years being Big Bird on Sesame Street. In his wonderful Guardian article he muses on the evolution of the show’s storylines, getting letters from NASA and why his work keeps him young. It made me grin like an idiot.
