Photography: Willem de Kam's candid shots of seaside holidays

Date
8 July 2013

Rotterdam-based photographer Willem de Kam’s images first dragged us in because “they looked a bit English,” so we were utterly delighted to discover that in actual fact the majority of them were taken in Bretagne, France, proving for the final time that more or less anywhere can look “a bit like England” if you have the right combination of stony beaches, disgruntled looking old people and some greenery. From sunny shots of head-scratching couples by the sea to one lady who looks weirdly like she’s got her head stuck in the wall, Willem’s candid photographs balance youthfulness with equal measures of bright sunshine and some oddity. All the better to intrigue you with.
