Photography: Yann Faucher photographs boys with a rare, vulnerable rawness (some NSFW)

Date
21 May 2014

Yann Faucher’s website is full of polished, carefully constructed images for fashion editorials – crisp, clean and multi-layered, they ooze the kind of feeling he is known for and commissioned to create. And it’s very beautiful, don’t get me wrong, but over on his Tumblr the overriding aesthetic is one of rawness, and somehow that’s far more exciting.

The stream of images on his blog is composed almost entirely of portraits of men and boys, posing sometimes in the fashionable and carefully put together outfits of his editorial work but shirtless and nude just as often. They’re sprawled in the relaxed, sensuous and vulnerable-seeming positions that only the most skilled photographers seem able to capture.

Similarly, Yann has the rare ability to focus in on the almost imperceptible details, like the quirk of a lip and a glazed eye, to create a strangely complete portrait of each of his subjects. Piled up together, the photographs look like they belong to a series about lost boys. Lost boys who fell into fashionable wardrobes and had their photograph taken by a man who got what they were about entirely. Which isn’t a bad skill for a photographer to be in possession of really.
