Chicago-based studio Nonporous’ superb designs for zines, records and tapes

Set up in 2014 by Kevin Mccaughey, Nonporous is publishing studio based in Chicago. “We are interested in the production of printed matter motivated by visual research and collaboration,” the practice says. “We address contemporary topics through a synthesis of graphic design, photography, literature, music and art.”

Nonporous’ website is a cavalcade of beautifully printed posters, zines, pamphlets and even cassette covers. There’s a DIY aesthetic running through all of the studio’s work with a focus on muted colours and clashing typefaces. Among the poetry pamphlets and music zines, a standout project includes a “starter kit” of posters that act as an “entry level set of ephemera that presents what Nonporous is interested in and exploring as a publishing studio.” With a dedication and passion for printed matter, the studio also provides printing service on its own Risograph.
