Ward Roberts: Courts

Posted by Bryony Quinn,

Stranger than the absence of people playing or spectating, I think, is the coordinating colours of these uncanny courts. As part of a stellar update, photographer Ward Roberts has captured what appears to be a perfect tension between the open space and the graphic lines that hit a horizon onto which the most remarkable and banal architecture rises up. Empty playing grounds is a somehow mystical subject (see Giasco Bertoli’s tennis courts series), anticipating action and yet strangely uninhabitable when seen in this curious and quiet light.
