As a kid I spent more than my fair share of time moving pixels around on a screen about half the size of an iPhone. I could kill hours in this fashion, endlessly tapping away at buttons that only made the most incremental differences to the images that appeared in front of me. Back then it never crossed my mind that platform gaming wasn’t the height of interactive excitement and that one day games like Grand Theft Auto would completely blow my mind.
Even though we’ve come a long way since Pong and Tetris, even Metroid and Marioland, there’s still something about shifting shapes around on a horizontal deck that sets my pulse racing, and minimalistic new platformer 140 looks set to do just that. Planned for release later this year, it’s already won an award for excellence in audio at IGF 2013, and if the trailer is anything to go by it’ll most likely win a few more. Bring it on retro gaming, I’ve been missing you.
