“Sadly, our civilization has no time for dreams. There’s no money in them.” So said Jan Svankmajer, the Czech surrealist filmmaker widely heralded as the father of stop-motion animation. Fortunately for us, the veteran director is as passionate about challenging that conviction as ever, and his new film released in London this week called Surviving Life revels in the main character Eugene’s bizarre dreamworld, and his efforts to make sense of them with his psychoanalyst. There’s the usual array of eye-popping imagery combined with Svankmajer’s unnervingly accurate puncturing of modern society’s preoccupations. All hail the master!
