Spending a moment with Khaled Chamma’s work is a restorative experience. Flowing lines ranging in density, smudged pastel colours and subtle, suggestive shapes come together to create something truly peaceful and absorbing.
It makes sense to hear that Khaled sees his creative practice as a way of reflecting on his “experience of the world and his place within it”, in close conjunction with his interest in nature, animals and zoology, he says. With this dual focus, Khaled creates evocative works that he hopes are “imbued with a sense of emotion”. His gestural mark making creates images that are simultaneously simple and complex, aiming to capture “a multitude of possibilities, movements and scenes”.
Khaled draws inspiration from the creature design of Terryl Whitlatch, the “dreamy” drawing and writings of Gibran Khalil Gibran, the “wondrous and vivid perspective” of Charles E. Burchfield and the “honest and world-building qualities” of Susan Te Kahurangi King’s work.
