    When Mexican designer Ricardo Casas talks about his role in the Heineken Pop Up City Lounge, one word crops up more than any other – behaviour. This gives us a clue that his underlying design philosophy is very focused on how people interact with a space rather than overarching principles into which the project should be shoehorned. To put it another way; he’s a designer who makes work with real people in mind rather than other designers.

In mid-September, that place is London, and this year’s London Design Festival is now just days away.     We’ve all seen paper process films – all sun-dappled mills and babbling brooks – but we’ve never seen anything quite like Ben Stevenson and Made Thought’s jaw-dropping Bright Red for G . F Smith Colorplan. Borrowing more from the vernacular of horror than the usual creative fare, it’s an super-intense journey into the heart, and art, of making paper. Ben’s film was premiered at a series of Colour In Context events last month which took place in London, Manchester and Edinburgh. Each evening saw three speakers talk about how colour influences and inspires their practice, and you can now enjoy all the talks below. It’s Nice That was proud to media partner with G . F Smith for the series, on which we were able to work with some of our favourite creatives.

    There’s only a couple of days let to catch this year’s Royal College of Art graduation exhibitions Show RCA 2014 and having watched it unfold over the past few months we’re thrilled that the final shows have been so brilliant. If you needed any more convincing that’s it’s worth heading to either the RCA’s Kensington or Battersea campus (or both?!) over the weekend, then hopefully this film might sway you. With more than 570 students’ work on show it’s impossible to fully appreciate the sheer scale of the exhibitions without being there, but hopefully this gives you a taster of just how good it is.

    We’ve focused a lot so far on the students- taking part in this year’s Royal College of Art graduate exhibition Show RCA 2014.     The Royal College of Art’s graduation shows are now in full swing and unsurprisingly the reaction to Show RCA 2014 has been terrific. Continuing with our video portraits of some of those students taking part, here are some more insights into the projects and personalities of those whose work is currently on show across the Kensington and Battersea campuses. From a ceramicist and a sculptor to an animator and one of those graduating in the brand new Service Design course, meet these four talents and then make a date to get down to the shows during the next week or so.

    After the uber-impressive opening of the Royal College of Art’s Kensington graduate show, attention turned to the school’s Battersea campus. While the exhibition set-up at the former site compartmentalised schools fairly rigidly, there was more intermingling of disciplines down over the river where the Fine Art and Materials students are showing off their skills.

    Graduate shows can be an intense experience and the Royal College of Art’s summer exhibition, which opens tomorrow, is no exception. With 575 students from six schools exhibiting over two campus, the sheer volume and diversity on display is a challenge in itself. Add in to this mix though the quality of the work and you have a pleasingly overwhelming cultural experience.

    When the London Graphic Centre asked us to commission the first creative to take over our new joint billboard project, Jean Jullien seemed an obvious choice. The massively talented illustrator has the perfect mix of technical skill and sly, funny ideas for us to let him loose on this exciting new showcase.

    Think of the final frantic few days before an art school degree show and you picture frenzied activity as pictures are framed, walls are whitewashed and final details are finessed. But for one of the Royal College of Art’s six schools, the preparations take on a very different form.

    “I am feeling strangely relaxed,” Katarina Hruskova says. “I am waiting for the panic to begin; I’m sure it’s going to happen at some point!” Her current placidity is impressive considering how much she currently has on her plate. As an about-to-graduate photography student at the Royal College of Art, Katarina is not only finishing off her final degree work; she has also helped work on the book which the final year students have published.

    For students the graduate show season marks the beginning of their careers but for some teachers it’s all about an ending. Professor Wendy Dagworthy, the Royal College of Art’s head of fashion, is overseeing her final degree shows later this month before bowing out after a stellar teaching career, first at Central Saint Martins and since 1998 at the RCA. In that time she has taught some of the industry’s contemporary stars, from Stella McCartney and Hussein Chalayan to Erdem and Giles Deacon and yet her enthusiasm ahead of this year’s shows appears as fierce as ever.

In preparation for the openings, we decided to speak to some people who know all about the high-pressure environment of the RCA graduation exhibitions. So we asked five alumni about their memories of the shows, what they learned and to see if they had any words of wisdom for this year’s crop…

    We announced back in January that we are proud to be partnering with the Design Museum for its annual Designers in Residence programme. Now in its seventh year, the initiative showcases the work of four new and emerging designers and the theme set this year was disruption. Applicants have now been whittled down to the final four and it gives us great pleasure to exclusively introduce the Designers in Residence 2014, four eclectic creatives sure to each bring something very different to this year’s exhibition which opens on 10 September.
