Rose Blake

Guest Posting 23 August – 27 August 2010

This week we have London based illustrator Rose Blake guest posting on the blog. Currently studying at the Royal College of Art and due to start her second, and final year in a few weeks we thought we’d get her to share a few posts including illustrators, writers, artists and musicians.

What have you got planned this week?

This week I’m revisiting my past, hopefully going to see The Libertines reunion at the Forum on Wednesday (I went to see them there in 2003). After that my friends are putting on a Karaoke night at the Alibi in Dalston, so I will probably sing a couple of songs there. I’m going to see my Grandma in New Malden on Friday, and on Sunday I’ll probably head over to the Notting Hill Carnival for a bit. During the days I’ll be trying to plough through my dissertation and also will probably be painting a giant cardboard sandwich.

What do your parents think you do?

They are both in the art world, so they know pretty much exactly what I do, and I constantly ask them for advice.

Who do you look like?

The girl from Snoopy

What’s your favourite sense?

Sight/Hearing

Tell us something people don’t know about you…

When I was a child, I sang the whole of the song ‘Bird dog’ to Bo Diddley whilst standing on a table.

Did your education count?

Yes, my drawings were terrible before I went to Kingston. I don’t really know about the RCA yet.

What word can’t you spell?

wierd? weird?

What’s next?

Finish my dissertation next month and update my website! Then I have a show with ‘’ This Is It’ in October at Jaguar Shoes. Then finish the RCA and all the projects I’m working on, and try to put on a good final show.

What’s your ‘Plan B’?

Bus driver

  1. Derek Boshier

    Guest posted by Rose Blake,

Derek became known as a 60’s pop artist, and has been prolific ever since. I think that his paintings and ink drawings are so inspiring. He also sends the most amazing hand drawn letters to his friends, in beautiful envelopes covered in his drawings. These would make a brilliant book.

  2. Robyn Hitchcock

    Guest posted by Rose Blake,

Robyn Hitchcock is a neighbour of my mum and dads. I always see him on Chiswick high road wearing purple coudroy trousers, a green checked shirt and round sunglasses. Apart from that, his music is amazing. Start listening to the album ‘Fegmania’ by Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians, and ‘Underwater Moonlight’ by The Soft Boys soon as you can. He also puts on amazing secret concerts at the Three Kings in Clerkenwell.

  3. Mike Redmond

    Guest posted by Rose Blake,

Mike is in my year at the RCA. We are working on a book together at the moment, about the lives of two schoolchildren. His drawings and ideas are strange and intense.

  4. David Byrne

    Guest posted by Rose Blake,

David Byrne’s journal is the most interesting thing on the internet, he is a great writer. He also releases a themed radio playlist every month, which is unpretentious and inspiring.

  5. John Broadley

    Guest posted by Rose Blake,

I was introduced to John Broadley’s drawings and comics on my BA. Jonathan Cape recently released a book of some of his work and it is amazing. His drawings are really free and not contrived in any way. I wish my work was a little more like his.
