Tyler Askew

Guest Posting 22 February – 26 February 2010

Tyler Askew is a designer and art director living in NYC. Spanning music, fashion, luxury and advertising worlds, Tyler works alongside big brands and small clients alike. Some recent clients include Puma, BBH, Staple Design, Six Scents, Lipman and Euro RSCG. He is also an internationally recognized DJ and host of a monthly radio program on Tokyo’s Shibuya FM. He is currently the Design Director for Exposure in New York City.

What have you got planned this week?

Work and more work. Travelling to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Atlanta.

What do your parents think you do?

They are pretty savvy and interested in art & design as a result of having two children in the design world.

Who do you look like?

I usually get Scandanavian, Dutch or German. This comes in handy when travelling outside the US.

What’s your favourite sense?

TIe between sight and sound. But smell is close behind.

Tell us something people don’t know about you…

I always thought I would follow my father’s footsteps into Legal Aid work. That was until I spent my entire freshman year at liberal arts college DJ’ing and making the flyers for the parties I was DJ’ing. They promptly stuck me in art school which I am eternally grateful for.

Did your education count?

I didn’t realise it at the time but yes, I was lucky to have a really good education all the way through (thanks Mom & Dad). At art college I met two professors, Peter Wong and Barry Roseman, who taught me that I didn’t know as much as I thought I did. I am surprised, however, at how rarely the question “Where did you go to school?” comes up.

What word can’t you spell?

Definitely

Tell us a good fact

Opinions are more fun than facts

What’s Next?

World domination with my crew at Exposure NYC. New parties, new music, new brands.

What’’s your ‘Plan B’?

Open a shop or start a magazine.

    Guest posted by Tyler Askew,

Over the last year I’ve been working as the Design Director at the NYC office of Exposure, and London-based creative agency. In between working for clients like Microsoft, Dr. Martens, Casio, Nike and Playstation, we found time to launch a new site focusing on the creative output of the NYC studio.

  2. Gerry V

    Guest posted by Tyler Askew,

One of my early inspirations and mentors, Gerry Villareal has a deep resume that shouldn’t go unnoticed. After an early stint with Emigre in the 90s, Gerry went on to work closely with design genius Fabien Baron at Baron&Baron, and later was the Head of Design at LIPMAN. Currently living in Bay Area, Gerry consults for brands like Apple when he is not busy raising his 3 kids.

  3. RSVP Gallery

    Guest posted by Tyler Askew,

Chicago’s Bucktown area is home to the recently opened RSVP Gallery. Mixing art and design with high (street) fashion, RSVP curates a top notch selection of products– many of which are exclusive to the USA. Look out for exciting RSVP projects and collaborations for 2010. If you can’t get to Chicago, check out their online shop.

The man, the myth, the legend. Futura revolutionized street art and was one of the first to embrace the internet back in the early 90s and new form of expression (visit his original site here). It might look fairly basic now, but this digital maze of images, animations and codes had a huge impression and helped to broaden his reach. For the last several years, Futura has been pursuing his love of photography through an image-per-day blog. Stimulating.
