Yesterday the Japan Art Association named the five laureates of the 2015 Praemium Imperiale International Arts Awards. Working across the fields of painting, sculpture, architecture, music and theatre/film, the prize is awarded to creatives recognised for their international achievements in the arts. Graphic designer and artist Tadanori Yokoo, sculptor Wolfgang Laib, architect Dominique Perrault, pianist Mitsuko Uchida and ballerina Syvlie Guillem will receive a prize of approximately £80,000 each, as well as a medal presented by Prince Hitachi, Honorary Patron of the Japan Art Association.
Since its inception in 1989, the award has become a marker for creative achievement. Previous recipients include Merce Cunningham, Jean-Luc Godard, Bruce Nauman and Bridget Riley.
