A Star Wars illustration for every day project Darth Days complete

In anticipation of the box office-busting film The Force Awakens illustrator George Folz created a Star Wars themed artwork each day for an entire year. The New York-based illustrator completed the project on 30 December last year just after the seventh instalment in the saga opened in cinemas. Each image takes a frame from the original trilogy and reimagines it as a cartoon panel. “I would absolutely love to see #darthdays as a book or 365 day tear-away calendar, but that’s something that rests in the hands of the folks at Disney and Lucasfilm,” he says. “Should they want to make a book or any sort of collected edition for the project happen, I’d be more than game for that.”

George will continue the project, albeit at a less intense pace, by releasing a new drawing a week until the next trilogy completes in 2020, but cannot predict how it will develop. “I’m going to take it a step at a time with regards to style, as style always seem to be something that just sorts itself out very organically,” says George. “I’ve a new creator-owned comic with writer named Dan Goldman coming about in 2016, and I expect some stylistic things in #darthdays might be affected by working on the two projects concurrently. I foresee further excursions into the trippy and weird aspects of Star Wars, but we’ll see.”

There’s no risk of burnout for George either. “I’ll always like Star Wars. Star Wars, along with three or four other things that I encountered in my childhood, are kind of like my life’s inspirational motifs: re-occurring themes that tap into what can be a pretty profound sense of awe, thankfulness, and humility,” he says. “I’ve seen the new movie twice now, and I think it’s really well done.”
