Hamburg-based studio I Like Birds' comprehensive film festival identity
Some of the best graphic identity projects are the ones which, to the chagrin of their creators, never come to fruition, and in these situations we’re more than happy to blow the trumpet of the design studios responsible. Here we are then blowing away for I Like Birds, a design studio based in Hamburg’s warehouse district, who put together a cohesive and fully fledged identity for Hamburg’s Photography Triennial.
“We developed a logo/grid system based on the placeholder frame, the stand-in for the big, constantly changing bandwidth of a photograph to be displayed,” the studio explains. “The placeholder-frame system, which can be applied to all forms of media, makes it possible for each Triennial to have its own distinct system of symbols and fonts while at the same time connecting each Triennial to the consistent corporate identity of the institution.” Comprising stationery, advertising, a bespoke typeface, wayfinding and digital design, the finished identity is satisfyingly comprehensive, regardless of whether or not it was put into practice.
