Jasper Goodall

Guest Posting 10 May – 14 May 2010

Artist and illustrator Jasper Goodall is providing the guest posts this week. Based on the UK’s south coast Jasper has consistently developed his work to create bold, symbolic and often provocative imagery. Having worked for the likes of The Face, Gucci, Nike, Adidas, and Dazed & Confused he also combines his professional practice with tutoring on the illustration course at the University of Brighton.

What have you got planned this week?

Hmm, Monday and Tuesday I’m working on some designs for a snowboard, Wednesday we have some Japanese ‘Niwaki’ style trees getting delivered, which we’ll have to plant pronto, Thursday and Friday are taken out with a research conference at the uni, weekend – old mate from Birmingham is visiting… after that it’s final degree show mania at University!

What do your parents think you do?

Ummm They are both not in this world anymore, they were both artists in their own ways so my work never confused them. I know they were very proud.

Who do you look like?

Someone said the other day I looked like Kevin Federline, so thats not bad. When I was younger I used to look like a skinny Clark Kent!

What’s your favourite sense?

Gotta be my eyes ain’t it?

Tell us something people don’t know about you…

I love pruning trees… properly.

Did your education count?

Yes I reckon it did.

What word can’t you spell?

Silouhette ahh! sillouhette hmmm… silhouette yeah!

Tell us a good fact

The best fact is this: a photon can act as a wave or a particle, kind of meaning it can be in two places at one time and it only decides which, when a conscious observer looks for it to be one or the other. Which kind of scientifically proves that on some level we create our own universe with our minds.

What’s Next?

When I have time to think of it I’ll tell you.

What’s your ‘Plan B’?

Become a tree surgeon? Win the lottery? ;-) or as a last resort – walk off into a jungle and get lost forever (and end up getting eaten by ants).

  1. Roger Dean

    Guest posted by Jasper Goodall,

I have always had a big soft spot for Roger Dean’s paintings. When I saw Avatar I felt that bits of it were familiar but couldn’t really put my finger on why. Then I was in a bookshop and picked up his book and bam! there was pandora, complete with floating mountains, rock arches and brightly coloured dragons.

I was sure he must have had a hand in the artistic direction of Avatar so I checked it out. It seems not, and there is a lot of conjecture about law suits! Make up your own mind. His site is a little sparse but Google image search will get you a lot.

  2. Sanna Annukka for nineteenseventythree

    Guest posted by Jasper Goodall,

Finnish artist/printmaker Sanna Annukka has collaborated with stationary company nineteenseventythree to produce a beautiful range of cards and gift wrap. The cards are lovely, there’s Tipis, birds, lakes, forests, flowers and more, picked out in foils – gold silver and bronze on recycled board, and the gift wrap is wonderful, kind of Navajo inspired abstract pattern.

  3. Fudge Factory Comics

    Guest posted by Jasper Goodall,

Nobody draws the ugly side of life quite like Travis Millard of Fudge Factory Comics. Garbage taking over the world, broken noses and fighting. Ah it’s good to be a human ain’t it? Check out the shop for mail order zines of bitter sweet ugliness.

  4. Jill Greenberg

    Guest posted by Jasper Goodall,

I met Jill in Sydney recently where we both spoke at the Semi Permanent design conference. She is an inspirational, ballsy, thought provoking LA photographer. I love this shot of a headless synchronized swimmer in heels… right up my street.

  5. Tom Edwards

    Guest posted by Jasper Goodall,

Illustrator Tom Edwards is going from strength to strength, his work is getting bigger, more complex and more and more involving. This image is a one meter square poster celebrating the 350th anniversary of the royal society. The web really doesn’t do it justice! I really love work that can pack in a huge amount of info and narrative into one image.
