Art for survival was the theme of artist Wednesday Holmes’ Nicer Tuesdays talk and it proved to be every bit as humbling and inspiring as that titles suggests. 26-years-old and based in London, Wednesday’s portfolio is concerned with dispelling negative stereotypes associated with mental health and gender – as well as queer liberation on a more general note. And as well as producing colourful, empowering illustration, Wednesday works as a writer and queer community organiser.
What really came through in Wednesday’s talk was the notion that art can connect people, it can educate and inform without belittling or pointing fingers. It’s something Wednesday achieves through working with other organisations to encourage community action and healing while facilitating education and uplifting the stories of others, designing for the future.
Wednesday finished the talk by answering a few questions from the audience around what advice they wish they were given at the beginning of their career and how to make a sustainable income from illustration. Make sure you watch to the end to hear Wednesday’s moving and rousing advice.
