More gloriously grotesque animation from Wong Ping – this time, An Emo Nose

Date

I’m finding more and more these days that when an email from Mr Wong Ping lands in my inbox, my day immediately becomes ten times more fun. This is partly due to Wong’s email manner, and partly due to his inimitable ability to pick up on subjects which have never before been covered in animation.

This time around for example, it’s An Emo Nose he’s interested in. “I have lost my interest in any kind of social activities after my nose leave me,” he explains in his email. “Am I enjoying loneliness as I thought, or the ugliness of the people around me makes me feel being alone is actually not bad at all?” [sic]

If you’re getting caught up in the symbolic ramifications of a depressed nose which tries, to no avail, to separate itself from its owner, I’d advise you just to sit back and revel in Wong’s storytelling ability. Get lost in his ample use of digital fades in psychedelic colours, the slow but unmissable physical decline of the protagonist and the sweet squeaky noises Nose makes as he pops off and floats towards the ocean. Wong is a veritable professional in all things bizarre, abstract, slightly grotesque and utterly enjoyable, and thankfully the medium of animation allows him to take us along for the ride.
