Bob Dylan’s latest music video – for a previously unreleased version of Not Dark Yet – combines the work of several major names from across the creative industry. Anthony Burrill provides typography across the project while director Clemens Habicht has selected a range of historic Magnum photography for the video, working with Josh Cheuse on creative direction. The ultimate aim is “to produce a film that speaks of the passing of time, our place in history and the human connection that defines our lives”, a release explains.
Type-wise, Burrill signatures can be spotted immediately. The palette leverages black and white, with “a little hint of yellow here and there” – visual tendencies the designer described his penchant for in our 2022 interview on his design archive. (“I think the power of black and white – the way it’s so strong, and the contrast – is just incredible.”) Elsewhere, the video shows traces of Burrill’s pre-digital roots and links to traditional printing.
Not Dark Yet also features the work of photographers including Chien-Chi Chang, Elliott Erwitt, Alex Webb, Hiroji Kubota and Nikos Economopoulos and Thomas Hoepker.
It’s been a busy month for Burrill. From 11-5 Feb, the graphic designer will display his recent body of works at You Have The Answer. The exhibition explores the ampersand as an embodiment of the connection between humans – and a longstanding component of the designer’s work.
