FKA twigs launches Instagram magazine, AVANTgarden

FKA twigs has launched the first issue of her Instagram magazine, AVANTgarden. Titled Roots. Shock. Beauty. the inaugural edition of the “digizine” – available from today 13 October – will be built and distributed using Instagram’s slides feature.

“Part magic, part memoir” the zine will take the form of a ten-page series based on the artist’s experiences and exploration of the self. The magazine will feature collaboration with other creatives from the music, art and fashion worlds, among others. “[It’s] a way for me to express myself without any rules or guidelines, with imagination and care,” she explains.

Roots. Shock. Beauty. focuses on the theme of braided hair styles and includes a cast of FKA twigs’ friends and past collaborators including editor and set designer Suzannah Pettigrew, stylist Matthew Joseph and hair stylist Rio Shreedharan. Casting for the issue was by FKA twigs and Olivia Kaifa, and photography is by R+D.

Matt de Jong also worked with twigs, designing the logo and co-designing layouts with Suzannah and twigs. Illustrations are by Roxie Warder.
