Dalia Halwani
Fictionalising The Arabesque, from London-based, British-Syrian artist Dalia Halwani, critiques how Arab and Islamic motifs are exploited in science fiction cinema. Drawing from Edward Said’s theories of othering, she reframes these aesthetics by situating Arab identity within futuristic environments. Centring Hijabi women both as audience and subjects, her hyperreal and theatrical sets reclaim this representation – using gouache and digital prints to highlight how stereotypes are exoticised, flattened and circulated in global cinema.
