Bizarre telenovelas and garish installations from Alex Da Corte

Date
20 January 2015

Perennial student artist Alex Da Corte has qualifications, residencies and awards coming up to his eyeballs having studied Film, Animation and Fine Arts at New York’s School of Visual Arts, Printmaking and Fine Arts at The University of the Arts, Philadelphia and then a cheeky MFA in Sculpture at Yale. Busy guy!

Having studied for the best part of a decade he’s now prolifically producing the kind of irreverent and bold installations that make us sit up and take notice of the conceptual art landscape with fresh eyes, slapping us in the face with their consumerist excess and lurid environs.

He’s fresh from collaborating with the supremely witty Jayson Musson on Easternsports, a surreal telenovela for Philadelphia’s ICA, the fruits of which we’ve yet to see. But a few tantalising stills, shown below, give a sense of the kind of high-brow philosophical discourse the pair have engaged with. Deep.
