So good it has a trailer! Meet fantastic new typeface, Cinderblock
You Work For Them is the next foundry in line to present a new font with a snazzy dedicated website, and this time they’ve take the presentation one step further with a trailer. Yes, a trailer – the kind that usually promotes a film – except this is dominated entirely by Cinderblock, their newest typographic offering.
As it turns out, “dominate” is precisely what Cinderblock is designed to do, achieving “maximum coverage of any given surface.” As the site explains, “its ultra-thin white spaces create a spatial rhythm between letters and counters. The extreme contrast between negative spaces has a powerful effect – and when typeset carefully – letters, sentences and paragraphs stack together like a wall of cinderblocks.”
Accompanied by a soundtrack which doesn’t sound dissimilar to leaning haphazardly on a Casio keyboard set to “noise mode,” this newest flourish is a charming way to communicate the font’s key features. Its chunkiness is reinforced by heavy clunking, while each weight is approximately 25% taller than the one it follows, making it feel like a mammoth offering. It’s not the easiest read, but it does ooze power and solidity. Are trailers set to be the next typographic trend?
