Commission Studio redesign Athens-based Kennedy Magazine

Date
10 October 2014

Kennedy magazine describes itself as “a biannual journal of curiosities” and the Athens-based publication’s second issue has recently been released. The look and feel has been overseen by Commission Studio, who are London-based designers and longtime friends of the site David McFarline and Christopher Moorby.

Kennedy editor Chris Kontos has put together an intriguing array of content, from interviews with artist Colin Snapp and photographer TIm Barber to a photographic ode to Los Angeles and an essay “on the decay of the art of lying.” This eclecticism is the title’s charm but David and Chris had to find a way of tying it into a coherent and cohesive whole. Their solution appears to be based around giving the magazine a real sense of rhythm; there’s a consistent simplicity to how articles are introduced and the odd time that breaks it’s all the more powerful.

The real triumph is that the magazine feels slick and stylish but not without character and the respect for imagery is a refreshing change from some of the fussy or unnecessary crops we sometimes come across.
