Elena Éper's spirited illustrations to make you smile and squirm
Spanish illustrator and designer Elena Éper has already begun making waves with her work for Reebok, Pull & Bear and Absolut Network, but it’s her latest works that we’ve been making a fuss of. Initially created by hand, Elena transfers her works to Photoshop, “when working on a digital platform I can do things I would have never imagined I could do on paper,” she explains.
Elena’s latest zine, Frau Trude is her own comic interpreting a tale by the Brothers Grimm. However, Elena’s version features mind-melting versions of the original: featuring giant statues of ears, floating hands, and green triangle shaped smiling monsters. Frau Trude is the perfect comic because of it’s balance: it creeps you out, but is so absurd it just makes you laugh.
It’s the liveliness of the illustrators work that is so rare. Even just displayed on the screen her work appears to have it’s own voice, one that is unrestrained and humorous, using warped references to modern day culture that allows it to appear familiar, but also new. Elena will be starting an MA in Motion Graphics this year and we look forward to seeing these creatures come to life.
