Ruohan Wang talks us through several projects which embody the theme of “stretch”

Based in Berlin and joining us from what looks like a very nice studio (judging by the small corner we were allowed to see) was Ruohan Wang. An artist who’s been based in the city since graduating from Berlin University of the Arts, Ruohan showed us the street she’s based on, which is also home to a prison, and how it’s a view that has inspired some of her work. She also added that, often, the only lights visible at night come from the prison and her studio as she works away on her vast portfolio.

The focus of Ruohan’s talk, however, was on how she incorporates the theme of stretch across her work. While sometimes this is a visual motif, for example, when she created a giant pair of legs and paraded them around Berlin. Other times, it’s more to do with how she approaches her work, for instance when she had to plan an entire solo show without seeing the space first. This required a certain adaptation and flexibility from her, a mode of thinking she describes as stretching.

Ruohan’s talk was packed full of so much work (including a trip to Jerusalem to paint a mural which she describes as akin to working at NASA) that it would be difficult for us to summarise it here, so check it out for yourself above.
