Paul Gacon and My Name Is design a typeface inspired by a New York moving company

Paris-based designer Paul Gacon collaborated with studio My Name Is on Movers, a typeface and hypothetical identity for a New York moving company. “The starting point was a photograph of a New York moving truck with amazing type on its side. Each letter was unevenly drawn and it almost seemed that two typefaces were used”, says Paul.

In response to the photograph, he drew a typeface entirely in capital letterforms, one of monoline forms and one more contrasted – maintaining the vernacular impression of the truck’s signage. Paul also added “specific glyphs as nods to New York City, such as boxed numbers of the rising ‘and.’” Applying the typeface to the context it was inspired by gives the project another facet, utilising the vocabulary of a hustling New York moving company in Washington Heights.
