A sharp monochrome cover and a feast of New York typography in the new Slanted magazine

Date

German design and typography publication Slanted recently took itself on a well deserved holiday to New York, picking up some rather lovely souvenirs in the form of features with the likes of Jessica Svendsen, Milton Glaser, Jon Burgerman and Lance Wyman.

As well as a gorgeous NYC photo essay shot by German photographer Jochen Sand, the mag also features three stencils from New York-based type foundries Commercial Type, XYZ Type and Village.

The striking monochrome cover is simple and clean; a fitting antidote to the manic pace of the city the publication celebrates. Each illustration, photograph or interview was selected as representing one of “the generation of designers, typographers and artists who witness and shape the transition of the city,” according to Slanted. “The continuing speed is New York’s power; everyone living here wants to do or become something/someone,” it adds. “Nobody lives here without a good reason. Creativity is part of the fight for survival. Therefore Andy Warhol’s banana – originally designed for the Velvet Underground – suits New York much better than the ‘big apple.’”
