SXSW Film Festival: Beauty is Embarrassing

“It’s so beautiful it hurts my feelings” says the institution that is Wayne White in Neil Berkeley’s Documentary Spotlight film, Beauty is Embarrassing. “I’ve worn a lot of different hats” he says, “painter, sculptor, cartoonist, puppeteer, set designer…” His work as a creator of Pee-wee’s Playhouse TV Show, the fact that he was the only man equipped with the right level of technical ability and abstract expression to create music videos for the likes of the Smashing Pumpkins and Peter Gabriel and his paintings of colourful, irreverent statements sitting in staid landscapes – all receive glowing testimonials from cartoon/artworld behemoths like Matt Groening.
