Ibeyi are the coolest twin sister music duo filling everyone’s ears with an etherial fusion of alternative R&B sounds and Afro-Cuban jazz. The double act, Lisa-Kaindé Diaz and Naomi Diaz, have released three albums to date Spell 31 (2022), Ash (2017) and Ibeyi (2015) and today the pair have just dropped their fourth: Offering. This 12-track project marks their first full-length release in four years (just in time for summer) as well as their debut album released independently through their own label, Ibeyi Records.
With Lisa being based in London and Naomi in Paris, this weekend guide is stacked with double the tips! Before they take their new sounds on tour across Europe (more on those dates here) we’re glad we managed to sneak in an interview with the duo to get to know them both a little better. Turns out Lisa and Naomi are keen gallery goers, fellow foodies and are getting up to all kinds of crafty, creative activities in their time off – ceramics and piñata making included!
You’ll find me at...
Lisa: “I love taking myself on creative dates! I try to go to as many gigs and exhibitions as I can. My favourites lately were Tracey Emin or the Belkis Ayón at the Tate and the concert of an artist call Anaiis. I also love to go dancing, summer day parties are my favourite kind of parties and lately I went to Bushbby’s block party and danced on reggaeton all day listening to all of the tunes from my childhood. It was incredible!”
Naomi: “I will definitely be going to a museum (alone or with someone). There so many places that I love in Paris but to give a few: Musee Rodin or Bourse du Commerce. Then I’ll usually sit at a brasserie that I like with a book and listen to music.”
I’ll be reading…
Lisa: “I love reading. I am into nonfiction and weird books. The last three books that have impacted me are Khalil Gibran’s A Prophet, The book of Tao and The Yield by Tara June Winch. I also follow the Substack called Fruiting Bodies by Niellah Arboine that I think is incredible!”
Naomi: “I’m currently reading La Vie Devant Soi by Romain Gary!”
I’ll be eating...
Lisa: “My favourite places to eat except eating at home (I love to cook with friends and family) are China town for dumplings or Sichuan food or a place called Guacamole in Peckham for tacos!”
Naomi: “I would like to use this opportunity to shout out my amazing chef friend Zelikha Dinga (@carodiarioparis). As for restaurants: ChopChop and Lao Siam are great spots but there’s so many places that I love Paris!”
I’ll be watching...
Lisa: “I am very late to the party but I just started Atlanta and I am obsessed with it. I also watched an incredible documentary recently called The Things We Don’t Say by Ornella Mutoni!”
Naomi: “Paris-Texas is a film that I love!”
Something I’ve got my eye on…
Lisa: “When I can I love buying pieces of art. I am in love with the prints from an artist called Joy Yamusangie.”
Naomi: “Cartier watches, designer furniture, my future car... My Instagram feed is full of these!”
This is on repeat in my headphones…
Lisa: “At the moment always Saya Gray, Pharoah Sanders’ The creator has a master plan and I also just discovered Avila Santo and I love him.”
Naomi: “Well, I love Esther Perel and I could listen to philosophy podcasts all day. I really enjoyed Wit’s new project but it’s Offering by Ibeyi that everybody should listen to, honestly!”
A memento from your weekend with me...
This is the space where creatives leave us with something to look at from the weekend we’ve spent with them. It could be anything really – a drawing, a picture or just something cool they think you should have a little look at.
Lisa: (left) “I handmade a piñata for my friend this week, she loves mac and cheese so I made her her own special one and filled it with candy. It was really fun to do. It has become my favourite gift to give.”
Naomi: (right) “You would probably see my paintings left over from the weekend or sometimes I do ceramics too!”
