Alto’s Odyssey, the sequel to Alto’s Adventure, sees its snowboarding star glide through the desert

The makers of award-winning mobile game Alto’s Adventure have returned with Alto’s Odyssey, a sequel that sees its snowboarding protagonist glide through a vastly different landscape. Launching today, the return of Alto will allow players to guide its star through the desert, down steep sand dunes, over ancient ruins and rocky terrain, all against a dusky, jewel-toned backdrop.

It’s the beautifully illustrated, tonal scenery that drew acclaim and addiction to the game’s first iteration, so that was core to Snowman’s (the studio behind the game) strategy for its second. “We want to make sure that both games feel connected,” artist and programmer Harry Nesbitt told Apple. “They’re part of the same world, so they need to feel like they’re painted with the same brush.”

Like the first, it’s an endless runner game where players help Alto navigate the landscape, to an orchestral score composed by Torin Borrowdale – the original game’s composer – and Todd Baker – the British composer who worked on Monument Valley 2. This complements the scenic environment, making the delectable visuals all the more immersive.

Alto’s Odyssey is out today for iOS (22 February).
