Gucci to collaborate with 80s Harlem outfitter Dapper Dan

In 80s Harlem, Dapper Dan was the man to know, clothing Mike Tyson, LL Cool J and everyone in between.

From his shop Dapper Dan’s Boutique on 125th street between Madison and Fifth Avenues, Dan sold head-turning outfits which granted him his name. Working with African tailors, Dan specialised in bootleg Louis Vuitton and Gucci clothes which proved so successful that the luxury labels took action and, under considerable pressure from Fendi, Dan shut down shop in 1992.

Yesterday it was announced that Dapper Dan was set to bring his ostentatious designs back to the luxury market, and this time, Gucci was on his side. The Harlem outfitter not only stars in Gucci’s new men’s tailoring campaign shot by (who else?) Glen Luchford, but is due to create a capsule collection in collaboration with Alessandro Michele to be released this spring. It is reported that Dapper Dan’s shop is set to reopen.
