Joan Cornellà's "ferocious" publication Zonzo is republished in hardback

Joan Cornellà’s book, Zonzo, is the second collection of cartoons by the uncompromising Spanish artist and illustrator. The book, previously only available as a limited edition softcover, has been republished by Fantagraphics. The publisher describes Zonzo, the follow up to 2015’s MoxNox, as “ferocious”. “Zonzo is populated almost exclusively by smiling psychopaths who invariable turn even the most mundane situation in to a side-splitting and cringe inducing farce,” says the publisher. “Cornellà’s humour mixes the absurdist comedy of Michael Kupperman with the transgressive political incorrectness of Johnny Ryan.”

Redesigned across 56 pages, a series of wordless, 6-panel cartoons see Joan’s dead-eyed protagonists maim, kill and delight each other in his inimitable, appalling, style.

The cult status of the artist started online and he has amassed millions of followers on social media with more than one million fans on Facebook alone. Famously elusive and reluctant to offer interviews about his work, Joan has recently taken to animating his gruesome works too.

In recent years, Joan has been embraced by more mainstream outlets and produced new work for the New York Times, El Jeuves and rock band Wilco.
