Weekly free mag Sport redesigned by in-house team

Weekly free magazine Sport has been redesigned, marking its tenth anniversary. This is the first redesign since 2011, and the project was undertaken by the mag’s in-house team, led by art director John Mahood.

Two new fonts, Circular and Neutraface, were introduced and the Publico face has been made more prominent. John redrew the grids, aiming to give the “headlines, body text and images more room to breathe.” He says: “The majority of pages run off a 12-column grid, though there are a couple of bastards in there if you can spot them! The pared back look allows for more white space, helping our great photography to have more prominence and varied framing options.”

The new look also introduces a refreshed approach to commissioning illustration, with this week’s issue featuring an illustrated feature called Love and Hate with an image of David Haye drawn by Cathy Kwan. “We’ll be introducing lots of new talent to the magazine via this page,” says John.
